3D scanner available

Hi friends,

I dropped off a 3D scanner in the studio. It’s in the cabinet under the printers by the window. Please check it out and play around! I found it really pretty fun, but it does take some time to get the workflow down - be patient!

It works best with complex geometry with distinct landmarks, like a human face! It does struggle with flat, symmetric and shiny objects. So for example scanning an unfired pot would work well, but it would be difficult after glazing  There are some little reflective dots in the case. If you are having trouble processing the scan, just slap a few on the surface of the object.

I found if you are scanning a human, I found it works well to just put the device on a tripod and spin them around in a chair. There’s a tripod in that same drawer.

Maybe we can make some fun halloween themed things hehe

Here is the software, you will need a fairly beefy nvidia GPU to process the scan data: Einstar Software Download : Einstar Support

Here is an example of somebody we scanned and printed for a model when we were planning some facility layout changes

Thank you, that is a fun and helpful donation! Love the example photo you included of where you used it for a redesign. @Chris or @paul , either of you worked with this model scanner before?

No but I’ve seen one demoed before. I can’t wait to use it… next week.

It seems to work fine with an Apple silicon MacBook as well. Was able to grab some of my left hand holding the scanner with my right hand.
