3d Print & Prototype Meetings

Hello all,

Thank you all for attending the meeting last month and helping clean and setting some stuff up.

The next major hurdle in getting the space up and running is making sure all of the printers work and training people on the printers. Who is interested teaching and who wants to be trained on how to use the 3d printers?

Speaking of getting the printers going; I saw in another thread I saw @Chris got one of the Ender3s running. Thanks!

Also, here is a tentative policies for the 3d Print & Prototype collective Tentative 3D Printing/Electronics Studio Policies - Google Docs
It still needs a bit more input and to be cleaned so please leave comments!

Thanks,
Paul

It’s difficult for me to commit to being available at specific times, but I’d like to be involved at least. I intend to be at the space occasionally so I’d like to be aware of the training so if I help someone more informally I can guide them in line with the training (e.g. use the slicer the training uses rather than confusing them with something totally different).

I made some comments on that document. But maybe we need to re-evaluate how we approach this. Are we providing the policy of the studio, or expectations on how to use the studio?

If we are just outlining the strict policy, we should try to stick a few black and white rules members must follow.

If we are trying to create some standard work on how to use printers, lab equipment, etc. then this is a much different document.

I really like how Twin Cities Makerspace has organized all their policies and handbooks. The first page is the basic rules for using the 3d lab, the rest of the document explains the expectations and also provides standard work and helpful tips.

Maybe we don’t need to re-invent the wheel here, just adapt their material for our own studio? 3d_lab | Twin Cities Maker Wiki

The Twin Cities Makerspace document looks like a nice place to start to me as well. I think we should try to keep the tone friendly and inclusive and try not to scare anyone off.

I’m likely just going to be using the electronics bench part of the space personally, though I think it would be fun to try printing letterpress-style plates at some point! (Not soon though probably!) I’d like to keep helping get that all set up, I have some more components and drawers at home I’d like to donate – and I saw someone else brought a bunch of stuff and lab equipment over since we all met as well! Awesome!

Edit: should I continue the electronics discussion in the other thread? I don’t want to hijack the 3D printing discussion.

I’d also be up for helping do trainings on the 3D printers, but I’d like to go through it myself with one of you experts first. I don’t know much but I would be up for sharing the basics with others getting started. I’ve done some printing at home but it would be helpful to know how you all would like to approach it here!

I do still have another ender printer I’d like to donate, but I might not be able to get it over to the space in the short term. (I’m on foot, just worried my cart will jostle it into disrepair on the way over, but I think I can hitch a ride from my cousin at some point.)
