I was just watching a video about keeping filament dry and using a foodsaver (and a silica packet) to help preserve rolls of filament. Is this something that would actually be useful? If so, I am very handy with foodsavers and may even have a spare one I can donate to the cause.
Keeping filament dry can be important. I’ve been 3D printing some parts for gasketed storage bins for the space. They have brackets and pvc pipe to hold the filament in place, a spot for a humidity meter, and also a 3D printed box to hold silica gel beads (basically what is in the packets). The bins are 19 Qt Sterilite and hold four rolls of filament and are $7 locally at Walmart.
I kinda prefer this approach since you can remove some filament to use and then put it back without having to consume anything like the foodsaver bags. I think the foodsaver bags might be interesting if someone planned to store some filament for a long time without a plan to use it since they’d be cheaper per roll.
Walmart also has 54qt and 80qt gasketed bins locally that can store more rolls at a cheaper per roll price, but I like the smaller bins so far until we need to store a much larger number.
The bins seem like a much better storage option for filament that is going to get used fairly regularly. I do not know much about filament or 3D printing, but would definitely like to learn. I am hoping to join an intro to 3D printing class one of these days. If anyone does have any filament that needs longer term storage and wants to try the foodsaver bags, just let me know and I’d be happy to bring mine in to seal it up for them.
